El Volcán Pacaya de Guatemala entra en actividad.
La Coordinadora Nacional para la Reducción de Desastres de Guatemala, CONRED por sus siglas, informó que el Volcán Pacaya ha entrado en fase de actividad por expulsión de magma incandescente, y que se mantiene los tres flujos de lava con longitudes entre 200 a 300 metros provenientes de una fisura en la base del cono Mackenney.
El volcán está siendo monitoreado debido a que en próximas horas pueden generarse nuevos flujos de lava. Las estaciones sísmicas han reportado que se registra un tremor constante, que es la vibración interna que todo volcán manifiesta asociado al ascenso de magma y por la desgasificación que presenta.

Se formó por la subducción de la placa de Cocos debajo de la placa del Caribe. Yace en la orilla de una considerable caldera formada en la era del Pleistoceno que contiene el lago de Amatitlán. La caldera se formó como resultado de al menos 90 grandes explosiones a lo largo de 300,000 años, y ha llegado a generar un total de 70 km³ de magma.

Se encuentra ubicado en el municipio de San Vicente Pacaya, en el departamento de Escuintla, en la parte sur de la República de Guatemala. Actualmente está catalogado como parque nacional. Goza de una altura de más de 2,500 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Se encuentra activo desde el año de 1996, luego de más de cien años de inactividad. Se han registrado 23 explosiones de gran magnitud.
