Palacio de Axayácatl: hallazgo arqueológico en México.
El Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, por sus siglas INAH, dio a conocer el día de hoy en un boletín oficial publicado en su página web el hallazgo realizado por especialistas de vestigios.
Los restos de un palacio prehispánico y de una casa construida en la época de Hernán Cortés, ubicados debajo del edificio que hoy ocupa el Nacional Monte de Piedad, uno de los edificios más emblemáticos del Centro Histórico de la capital de México, y a un costado de la Catedral Metropolitana.

Reconocido como el Palacio de Axayácatl, fue habitado por la comitiva de Cortés a su arribo al corazón de Tenochtitlan, ahora, cinco siglos después como parte del Programa de Arqueología Urbana, se descubrieron pisos de lajas de basalto, correspondiente a las Casas Viejas de Axayácatl, tlatoani en funciones en Tenochtitlan, entre los años 1469 y 1481.
El INAH explica en su comunicado que por debajo de la casa, a 3 metros más de profundidad, se detectaron los restos de otro piso de lajas de basalto, pero de época prehispánica. Dadas sus características, los expertos sostienen que formó parte de un espacio abierto del antiguo Palacio de Axayácatl, probablemente, un patio.
Investigadores del equipo de arqueología explicaron que los vestigios de la naciente época virreinal corresponden a materiales reutilizados de las Casas de Axayácatl que, al igual que otras estructuras del Recinto Sagrado de Tenochtitlan, fueron destruidas por los españoles y sus aliados indígenas, casi hasta sus cimientos.
En las imágenes se pueden observar que empotrados en la fachada de la esquina interior sureste del cuarto colonial, se detectaron dos sillares prehispánicos trabajados en altorrelieve que representan una serpiente emplumada, Quetzalcóatl, y un tocado de plumas, los cuales debieron pertenecer a un panel del Palacio de Axayácatl. Así también, formando parte un fuste, se registró otra escultura mexica con el glifo que simboliza el tianquiztli o mercado.
Este hallazgo, de alto valor arqueológico, se une al del Templo Mayor para brindar mayor información respecto a la cultura prehispánica de México.
