Un estudio publicado en la revista Nature Climate Change, concluye que el cambio climático ya le pasa factura a más de la mitad de los océanos.
El cambio de temperatura y los niveles de salinidad en las profundidades de los océanos afectan la circulación oceánica global e impacta el nivel del mar y representa una amenaza para los ecosistemas.
Además las capas de hielo que se han derretido en Groenlandia y la Antártida han elevado el nivel del mar en 1.8 cm en promedio anual desde los años 90.
El Instituto Meteorológico Danés, junto con la Universidad de Leeds, coincide que el aumento del nivel del mar registra hoy su peor diagnóstico.
Aumento de nivel del mar afectaría a millones de personas.
De seguir a este ritmo el derretimiento de glaciares, espera que las capas de hielo aumenten el nivel del mar uno 17 centímetros y pongan en peligro a 16 millones de personas que viven en las franjas costeras de las naciones con océanos.
El Dr. Tom Slater, autor principal del estudio e investigador del clima en el Centro de Observación y Modelado Polar de la Universidad de Leeds, dijo que el deshielo está superando los modelos climáticos que usamos para guiarnos, y corremos el peligro de no estar preparados para los riesgos que plantea el aumento del nivel del mar.
Por su parte, el Dr. Eri Guilyardi, investigador de la Universidad de Reading y del Laboratorio de Oceanografía y Clima de París, dijo que hemos visto cambios en las temperaturas de los océanos en la superficie de las aguas por el cambio climático durante décadas, pero los cambios en amplias áreas del océano, particularmente en las profundidades, son mucho más difíciles de detectar.
El estudio en el impacto del cambio climático en los océanos, se había logrado a través de la medición de las temperaturas en la superficie de las aguas, el aumento del nivel del mar y las lluvias, pero no en las profundidades dada las dificultades para medir las temperaturas y los niveles de sal.
