«Perro cantor» de Nueva Guinea regresa de su extinción.
El Instituto Nacional de Investigación del Genoma Humano, NHGRI por sus siglas, junto a los Institutos Nacionales de Salud de los Estados Unidos y la Universidad de Cenderawasih en Indonesia, publicaron el maravilloso descubrimiento en la revista PNAS.

La especie del «perro cantor» originaria de Nueva Guinea, regresó de su extinción. De la especie canis lupus hallstromi, es una subespecie de lobo. Se le apoda «cantor» por emitir sonidos armónicos comparables a los de una ballena jorobada.
Nativo de Nueva Guinea y, según los análisis genéticos, pariente cercano del dingo australiano, tenía más de 50 años desaparecido.
Sin embargo, se confirmó su hallazgo y se le encontró en estado natural vagando por las tierras altas de Indonesia.
La Fundación del Perro Silvestre de las Tierras Altas de Nueva Guinea,informó que descubrió 15 ejemplares en estado salvaje, en un hábitat de unos 4 mil metros de altura sobre el nivel del mar.
Y un poco menos de 200 ejemplares de la especie viven en centros de conservación o en zoológicos por todo el mundo. Todos descendientes de algunos de los perros salvajes que fueron capturados en la década de 1970.
Los investigadores esperan criar algunos ejemplares de los perros salvajes recién descubiertos de los perros cantores de Nueva Guinea, para ayudar a preservar la raza original.
