Matthew Staymates, ingeniero mecánico y de dinámica de fluidos del Instituto Nacional de Estándares y Tecnología (Maryland, EE. UU.), estudia diferentes tipos de máscaras para determinar cuáles son las más efectivas para reducir la transmisión de enfermedades. Hasta el momento ha descubierto que las mascarillas con válvulas no evitan la diseminación de la saliva.
En la publicación Physics of Fluids, Matthew Staymates describe que exploró la dinámica de flujo básica de las máscarillas N95 con o sin válvulas de exhalación. Para hacer esto, generó un video asombroso con cámaras de alta velocidad.

La válvula en las mascarillas N95 está diseñada para mejorar la comodidad del usuario al reducir la resistencia a la filtración durante la exhalación.
De esta forma, las imágenes demostraron que los cubrebocas sin válvulas filtraban con éxito la mayor parte de las gotas de la exhalación.
En cambio las mascarillas con válvulas permitían que un chorro de aire cargado de gotas de saliva escapara y se diseminara.
Staymates dijo que su investigación demostró que las mascarillas N95 con válvula de exhalación no son apropiadas para filtrar las gotitas respiratorias que salen de una persona.
Nuestro conocimiento actual es que C-19 se transmite en parte a través de gotitas respiratorias, por lo que los N95 con válvulas no son buenos para el control de la fuente durante esta pandemia, dijo.
Encontró que las mascarillas N95 sin válvulas son efectivas para evitar que la mayoría de las gotas penetren a través del material de la máscara.
