Millones de personas en riesgo por la falla de San Ramón.
La falla de San Ramón, situada en el corazón de Santiago, representa un serio peligro para millones de personas, señala una investigación.
La Falla de San Ramón, ubicada a unos 10 o 12 kilómetros bajo la superficie terrestre, es una falla geológica inversa y activa, en las faldas de la sierra de San Ramón.
Esta sierra, se ubica en pleno sector oriente de Santiago, en donde existen asentamientos humanos con más de 1,700,000 personas.
Se extiende por 25 km., en sentido norte-sur, y está ubicada entre los ríos Mapocho y Maipo. Cruza las localidades de: Vitacura, Las Condes, La Reina, Peñalolén, La Florida y Puente Alto.
En el estudio publicado por el geólogo Gabriel Easton, académico de la Universidad de Chile, se cree que se prolongaría a lo largo de Barnechea y Pirque.

Se estima que más de tres millones de personas serían afectadas ante un sismo en esta falla. La devastación podría ser mayor a la ocurrida el 27 de febrero de 2010.
La investigación.
El estudio, liderado por Easton, señala el impacto que tendría un evento telúrico sobre la falla.
La investigación analizó la comuna de Peñalolén, lugar donde se construye un condominio sobre la ubicación de la falla, situación que tiene alerta a los vecinos del sector.
Los estudios, geológicos, sismológicos y geofísicos, han evidenciado que esta falla es capaz de generar terremotos de magnitudes entre 7.2 a 7.5.
Esto por la ruptura en la superficie a lo largo de las decenas de kilómetros en donde se ubica en el piedemonte del frente cordillerano.

Easton, miembro del Citrid (Programa de Reducción de Riesgo y Desastres), señala que:
Esto último representa la mayor amenaza: la posibilidad de ruptura o dislocación del suelo, junto a movimientos (aceleraciones) localmente mucho mayores a los que, por ejemplo, produjo el terremoto de 2010 en Santiago.
El estudio publicado por Easton y su equipo, establece que la ciudad de Santiago, habitada por cerca de siete millones de personas, ha experimentado una expansión urbana sin precedentes en las últimas cuatro décadas.
El estudio identifica esta falla como un elemento “activo”, es decir una falla que puede producir sus propios terremotos, la transforma en una amenaza.
Los expertos explican que:
Si observamos el proceso de urbanización que se ha llevado cabo en los últimos 40 años sobre el piedemonte cordillerano, lugar por donde pasa la falla, observamos un peligro, ya que tenemos a población expuesta a esta amenaza.
La falla San Ramón se ha catalogado como un peligro inminente.
