Es una nueva especie de escarabajo que no mide más de 5 milímetros.
Una nueva especie de escarabajo se encontró en el municipio de Carmen del Viboral, Antioquía, en Colombia.
Los escarabajos ocupan el 70% de la biodiversidad de la tierra. Son un grupo muy antiguo con una historia de más de 65 millones de años y han logrado un gran éxito en la evolución.
Claudia A. Medina, entomóloga e investigadora del Programa de Ciencias de la Biodiversidad del Instituto Humboldt, cree que el registro de nuevas especies de escarabajos es muy importante porque hacen un gran aporte al inventario nacional de biodiversidad y también son un indicador del nivel de protección forestal que tiene el país.
Cada especie cuenta. Más aún cuando se encuentra en un hábitat particular o cuando tiene requerimientos alimenticios específicos, lo cual es una señal de que hay algo más en ese bosque que valdría la pena conservar, señala la investigadora.
En el desarrollo del Proyecto Biológico Colombiano, en el municipio de Carmen de Viboral en Antioquía se descubrió esta nueva especie científica llamada Scatimus strenua, en una serie de viajes de campo para mejorar la iniciativa nacional de conocimiento de la biodiversidad.
Según Medina, El nombre de la especie es un homenaje a las mujeres valientes que sobrellevaron el conflicto armado en esta zona del país.
Años para identificar esta nueva especie.
De esta manera, identificar una nueva especie de escarabajo es todo un reto por la enorme variación morfológica de las especies de este grupo. En este caso, los investigadores tardaron 4 años en verificar y confirmar la especie.
Como bien señala la investigadora: la diversidad de esas especies de insectos está subestimada en Colombia. No tenemos inventarios actualizados precisamente por falta de un mayor trabajo taxonómico. En el país somos muy pocos los investigadores que nos dedicamos a la identificación de especies.
El Scatimus strenua pertenece al grupo Scatimus Erichson, un género neotropical de pequeños escarabajos coprófagos tuneleros. Viven en una amplia variedad de hábitats, incluyendo selvas bajas, colinas y bosques nubosos desde México hasta Brasil.
