Se sintió con fuerza también a unos 50 kilómetros del epicentro, en la capital Zagreb, donde la gente asustada salió a las calles, constató un periodista de la AFP.
Las imágenes de la ciudad, donde viven unas 20,000 personas, mostraban el colapso de techos y calles con ladrillos y escombros.
El evento sísmico tuvo lugar un día después de otro sismo de menor magnitud en Petrinja que causó daños en edificios.
Las primeras imágenes del poderoso terremoto provienen del condado de Sisak-Moslavina, y confirman los daños en la ciudad de Petrinja a 2 kilómetros del epicentro.
Un terremoto de 5.3 sacudió en marzo la capital croata, provocando importantes destrozos materiales. Los Balcanes son una zona de fuerte actividad sísmica y los sismos son frecuentes.
