Fotografías logradas por una cámara trampa, instalada en el Parque Nacional Serra dos Órgãos en el Bosque Atlántico de Brasil, retratan la imagen de un puma blanco.
El puma blanco, con padecimiento de leucismo se le pudo apreciar deambulando en las inmediaciones de una zona natural protegida en Brasil.
Este es el primer caso de un puma blanco en estado salvaje confirmado por investigadores.
Un grupo de ellos, miembros del Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservación de la Biodiversidad (ICMBio), aclararon que esta es una mutación que tiñe de blanco la mayor parte del cuerpo.
Esta particularidad está contenida en un gen regresivo que se expresa raramente. Etimológicamente, su raíz apela a leu, que en griego quiere decir blanco.
Muchas veces esta condición tiende a confundirse comúnmente con el albinismo. Sin embargo, son dos cosas diferentes.
Al contrario de lo que ocurre con el albinismo, los ojos de los animales que tienen esta condición mantienen la pigmentación natural de la especie.
Además, no se tienen registros que los animales con este padecimiento sean más sensibles a la luz del sol, ya que no carecen por completo de la melanina, que actúa como protección ante la radiación.
El puma blanco se le avistó por primera vez en 2013, en el Parque Nacional Serra dos Órgãos, y no se volvió a saber de él. Hasta inicios de este año, que hizo su aparición frente a las cámaras.
En el caso de los pumas, este hallazgo es sorprendente, ya que las tonalidades de sus pelajes varían muy poco de una especie a otra.
La falta de color en este puma blanco probablemente no esté relacionada con ninguna ventaja o desventaja evolutiva.
