El colosal iceberg cuenta con 150 metros de espesor, y por casi diez años después que se empezó a dar seguimiento, las grietas alcanzaron el tamaño que permitió su desprendimiento.
Durante este tiempo, los científicos de la estación de investigación Halley de British Antarctic Survey (BAS), estuvieron asentados en la plataforma de hielo Brunt.
Sin embargo, ante el avance de la descomposición del hielo de la plataforma se vieron forzados a desalojarla.
El equipo de 12 personas que trabajaba en la estación partió a mediados de febrero en un avión BAS Twin Otter. La estación ahora está cerrada por el invierno antártico.
El día de hoy se llevó a cabo el gran evento de partimiento, en donde el colosal iceberg vio su origen.
La primera indicación de que un evento de parto era inminente se produjo en noviembre de 2020 cuando un nuevo abismo, llamado North Rift, se dirigió hacia otro gran abismo cerca de Stancomb-Wills Glacier Tongue a 35 km de distancia.
North Rift es la tercera gran grieta a través de la plataforma de hielo que se activa en la última década.
Durante enero, esta grieta avanzó hacia el noreste a una velocidad de hasta 1 km por día. Cortando la plataforma de hielo flotante.
El iceberg se formó cuando la grieta se ensanchó varios cientos de metros en unas pocas horas en la mañana del 26 de febrero, liberándolo del resto de la plataforma de hielo flotante.
