Una foto satelital de la Nasa muestra 11 nuevas masas de hielo, del iceberg gigante desintegrado en torno a la isla de San Pedro.
Las imágenes satelitales muestran la manera en que el iceberg gigante se desintegró durante su viaje.
Las imágenes captadas por el Observatorio de la Tierra de la NASA, mostraron la ubicación de los trozos de hielo que rodean el territorio.
Un total de 11 nuevos cuerpos de hielo, denominados desde A-68B hasta A-68M.
Antecedentes.
El iceberg gigante denominado A-68a, se desprendió de la barrera de hielo Larsen el julio de 2017.
Ubicada en la Antártida, comenzó un viaje que incluyó pasar por la isla de Georgia del Sur, en donde “amenazó” con colapsar y encallar.
Luego se dirigió a unos 1,500 kilómetros hacia el norte, con dirección al santuario de focas y pingüinos, ubicado en la isla de San Pedro.
En sus inicios, la superficie del iceberg gigante rondaba los 6,000 kilómetros cuadrados.
Llegó a ser considerado el más grande de mundo, pero el calentamiento global hizo su labor y desde abril del año 2020 comenzó a fragmentarse.
Ya en diciembre del año pasado, había disminuido a unos 3,900 kilómetros cuadrados.
Pero el iceberg gigante fue disminuyendo su tamaño, y con ello su velocidad.
A mediados del mes de diciembre y hasta inicios del año 2021, alcanzó el área de la plataforma de la isla de Georgia del Sur, donde se supone comenzó a fragmentarse.
La amenaza que constituía el iceberg gigante comenzó a disiparse a medida que su fragmentación prosiguió.
Luego el proceso se aceleró durante la segunda quincena de enero con desprendimientos cada vez más frecuentes.
El iceberg más grande del mundo se desintegró y parece que formó una especie de “sopa de letras” alrededor de un refugio de vida silvestre.
