Un nuevo estudio reveló que la reducción drástica de muertes de uno de los primates más raros de África, el colobo rojo de Zanzíbar (Piliocolobus kirkii), se dio después de la instalación de cuatro topes a lo largo de un tramo de carretera donde la especie cruzaba con frecuencia.
Los colobos rojos de Zanzíbar se encuentran solamente en el archipiélago de Zanzíbar. Están clasificados como en peligro de extinción por la Lista Roja de la UICN. Esta especie depende de los bosques de la isla Unguja para su supervivencia. Alrededor de la mitad de la población de la especie se encuentra en el Parque Nacional Jozani-Chwaka Bay.
Los primatólogos de la Universidad de Bangor, en colaboración con los parques nacionales de Zanzíbar y la Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), evaluaron la mortalidad por colisiones de vehículos. Estas son una amenaza constante que enfrentan los primates que viven en hábitats cada vez más fragmentados y atravesados por carreteras.
Descubrieron que un colobo era asesinado en promedio cada 2-3 semanas por el tráfico de la carretera que atravesaba el parque nacional. Después de instalar los topes, esto se redujo a uno cada seis semanas.
Si bien es un gran progreso, esta tasa de mortalidad sigue siendo una amenaza significativa para la especie. Ya que la depredación natural tiende a apuntar a los individuos más débiles. En cambio, los atropellamientos son indiscriminados y aniquila tanto a adultos con actividad reproductiva como a los muy jóvenes o ancianos.
