Arqueólogos en Turquía han descubierto los restos de un coliseo de la época romana, donde hasta 20 mil espectadores quizá vitorearon y abuchearon mientras veían combates de gladiadores y peleas de animales salvajes.
El coliseo romano de 1,800 años de antigüedad se descubrió en las colinas de la antigua ciudad de Mastaura, en la provincia de Aydin en Turquía.
La mayor parte del anfiteatro estaba bajo tierra además de estar cubierta con arbustos y árboles.
Los arqueólogos encontraron encontraron este coliseo romano en el verano de 2020. Después de encontrar una inmensa mampostería que se elevaba del suelo, el equipo inmediatamente comenzó a limpiar y estudiar el sitio. De octubre a diciembre de 2020, cortaron todos los arbustos y árboles.
Al limpiar el sitio quedó claro que el sitio era antiguo. El coliseo data de aproximadamente el año 200 d.C.

Gran parte de la estructura subterránea de la arena se conserva muy bien. A decir de los arqueólogos es sólido, como si se acabara de construir. Muchas de las estructuras a nivel del suelo se han derrumbado a lo largo de los años. Sin embargo aún es posible encontrar algunas de las filas de asientos, la arena, y los muros de apoyo exteriores.
Entre 15 mil y 20 mil personas podían entrar en este coliseo, lo que la hace más pequeña que el famoso Coliseo de Roma, que albergaba a unas 50 mil personas.
Sin embargo, las batallas de gladiadores y las peleas de animales salvajes del coliseo romano de Mastaura fueron tan sangrientas como las del Coliseo de Roma. La arena también tenía áreas especializadas, incluidas salas de espera de gladiadores y salas de entretenimiento para espectadores privados, hallaron los arqueólogos.

Este descubrimiento es magnífico porque no hay ningún ejemplo previo de un anfiteatro como este en Asia Menor y sus alrededores. El coliseo romano probablemente atrajo a espectadores de todas partes. Actualmente los arqueólogos están trabajando con el Museo Arqueológico de Aydın y la Municipalidad de Nazilli, donde está Mastaura, para limpiar y preservar el coliseo.
Planean tratar las grietas en las paredes del edificio y piedras de mampostería que se están cayendo de la estructura antigua. El equipo ya ha conservado una de las paredes y ha comenzado a hacer escaneos láser de la estructura. Esto para que puedan hacer una imagen virtual en 3D de ella.
Posteriormente los arqueólogos planean hacer estudios geofísicos sobre el edificio para que puedan entender cómo son las partes subterráneas del edificio.
