El Departamento de Vida Silvestre de la Universidad Estatal de Humboldt en California con el profesor Matt Johnson tiene la intención de demostrar la gran ayuda que pueden ser las lechuzas.
Estudiantes de posgrado han estado investigando el impacto de las aves, en especial lechuzas, en los viñedos de California. Esto como una opción más ecológica para evitar el uso de raticidas.
De 75 bodegas investigadas, alrededor del 80 por ciento de ellas dicen que están implementando cajas para nidos de lechuzas en un intento de controlar a los roedores, especialmente las tuzas. Johnson explica que tan solo el Valle de Napa tiene más de 300 de estas cajas que, si se configuran correctamente, se convertirán en los nuevos hogares de lechuzas de la región.
Ha habido un aumento en el uso de cajas para nidos en los viñedos de uva de California, no solo en el área de Napa / Sonoma, sino también en otras regiones como el Valle Central, dijo Johnson. Curiosamente, el uso de cajas para nidos de lechuza también se está utilizando en otras áreas y para otros cultivos en todo el mundo, como en Israel, Malasia Kenia y España.
Un equipo de tres estudiantes monitorea más de 280 de estas cajas nido en 65 viñedos diferentes. Una familia de lechuzas en cada nido puede acabar con un promedio de 3,400 roedores cada año.
El objetivo principal de esta investigación es demostrar que estas cajas para nidos de lechuzas realmente reducen la cantidad de roedores. Algo que que aún no logran de manera concluyente. Pero sí han descubierto que los agricultores que usan estas cajas también usan menos raticida.
Por supuesto, aún no se ha probado si el uso de cajas para lechuzas comunes causó esa reducción en raticidas, dijo Johnson. No obstante, este resultado es alentador.
La facilidad con la que las lechuzas están dispuestos a instalarse en viñedos parece hacer que al menos valga la pena intentarlo.
