¿La Tierra está en peligro? En los últimos días de 2021, tres asteroides se acercarán a la Tierra, según el Centro de Estudios de Objetos Cercanos a la Tierra (CNEOS) de la NASA.
El primer asteroide.
El primero de los tres asteroides que se acercarán a la Tierra recibe el nombre de 2016 TR54.
Y de acuerdo con la base de datos de la NASA, pasó por la Tierra este 24 de diciembre a las 6:30 a.m. UTC.
Se estima que el asteroide mide entre 100 y 230 metros de diámetro y pasó por la Tierra a una velocidad de 55,800 kilómetros por hora.
Esto a una distancia de cerca de 6 millones quinientos mil kilómetros de distancia.
Es decir, alrededor de 17 veces la distancia entre la Tierra y la Luna.
Un segundo asteroide.
Un segundo asteroide, pasó por la Tierra este 27 de diciembre.
Se llama 2018 AH, y se estima que es un poco más pequeño que 2016 TR54 con un diámetro de entre 89 y 179 metros.
Su acercamiento más cercano fue a las 2:40 p.m. UTC, a una velocidad de 45,705 kilómetros por hora.
Rozó la Tierra a una distancia de 1,066,673 kilómetros, que es poco más del doble de la distancia entre la Tierra y la Luna.
Hoy, pasará un tercer asteroide.
El último asteroide que se acercará al planeta antes de fin de año se llama 2017 AE3.
Este viaja a 68,558 kilómetros por hora cuando haga su aproximación más cercana a nuestro planeta será a las 1:54 am UTC de este 29 de diciembre.
El asteroide denominado ET. 2017 AE3 pasará por la Tierra a una distancia de alrededor de 3.05 millones de kilómetros y se estima que mide entre 120 metros y 260 metros de diámetro.
Pero… ¿Y la Tierra?
Cabe preguntarnos ¿La Tierra está en peligro? ¿La NASA tiene conocimiento de algún asteroide que amenace al planeta?
Un experto de la NASA acudió al canal de YouTube de la agencia con un video para responder esta pregunta: «¿Conoce la NASA algún asteroide que amenace la Tierra?»
Y la NASA recurrió a su canal de YouTube para responder una pregunta popular como parte de su serie «Preguntamos a un experto de la NASA».
El experto de la NASA Davide Farnocchia, quien explicó que la NASA no tiene conocimiento de ningún asteroide que amenace al planeta.
Pero la agencia siempre está buscando.
Farnocchia explicó que durante más de 20 años, la NASA ha financiado programas que construyen telescopios como telescopios para observar el cielo.
Además, agregó que a lo largo de los años, las observaciones han aumentado y ahora la agencia está observando el cielo casi todas las noches.
Con este seguimiento a la bóveda celeste, la agencia localizó un 95% de los asteroides que tienen más de 85 metros y que podrían acercarse al planeta.
Con esta información, la NASA puede decir que durante los próximos 100 años, existe una probabilidad muy baja de una amenaza de asteroide. Y no es una apuesta.
