Este fuerte y profundo terremoto acontece en una región bastante sensible, ya que se han presentado eventos sísmicos y un tsunami de magnitud mundial.
Un fuerte y profundo terremoto de magnitud 6.6, se presentó al sur del Océano Pacífico, en la isla de Fiji, este jueves 17 de febrero a las 09:21 (GMT +13).

El fuerte y profundo sismo.
Este sismo causa alarma en la comunidad científica, ya que se estima que la energía liberada es de 5 x 1014 joules, es decir el equivalente a 1.2 x 105 toneladas de TNT o 7.5 bombas atómicas.
Por su parte, el USGS de los EE.UU., elevó a 6.8 la magnitud del fuerte y profundo terremoto al sur de las Islas Fiji.
El sismo presentó una profundidad irregular de unos 535 kilómetros.
Aunque debido a esta característica, el USGS dijo que:
Según la profundidad del terremoto, no se espera un tsunami.
Tampoco existe amenaza de tsunami en la costa occidental de Estados Unidos, Alaska o Columbia Británica, explicó.
Según un tuit de la Agencia de Manejo de Emergencias de Hawái, tampoco se espera ninguna amenaza de tsunami para la isla.
El sismo fue percibido débilmente en Tonga, debido a su cercanía en donde no hubo alerta de tsunami, ya que el sismo fue profundo.
Recientemente, dos terremotos de fuerte magnitud han acontecido en el Cinturón o Anillo de Fuego del Pacífico en las últimas 24 horas: 2 sismos de magnitud 6, en Guatemala y Fiji y 3 sismos más entre magnitud 5 y 6, en otros lugares del mundo.
Este fuerte terremoto de magnitud 6.8 ocurrió en el sur de las Islas Fiji hace aproximadamente 3 horas.
Placas tectónicas.
Fiji se encuentra en la esquina nordeste de la placa indoaustraliana, donde esta subducciona o se introduce bajo la placa del Pacífico.
Mientras que en la cuenca Norte de Fiji, una microplaca o, en este caso, cuenca posterior de arco se ubica al oeste de las islas, entre la Zona de fractura Norte de Fiji y la Zona de fractura Hunter al sur.
Forma parte del cinturón de Fuego del Pacífico, una línea de volcanes en las fronteras del océano.
Nuevas placas tectónicas.
En la zona, nuevas placas tectónicas se descubrieron en el año 2017, gracias a los fuertes terremotos que azotan en la región.
Estas podrían explicar los misteriosos terremotos ocurridos en el Pacífico.
Lo anterior, de acuerdo con un estudio realizado por la Universidad de Houston, Texas, en Estados Unidos.
Con una técnica de mapeo en 3D, Jonny Wu y su equipo de expertos sismólogos descubrieron esta capa de placas sometida a un proceso de subducción, por el cual borde de una placa se desliza debajo del borde de la otra, desde hace millones de años.
