Ubicada a 150 kilómetros de la costa de São Paulo en Brasil, se encuentra la isla deshabitada de Ilha da Queimada Grande, o como se la conoce más comúnmente, “isla de las cobras” o “isla de las serpientes”.

Esto ha tenido un profundo impacto en la población de serpientes que ha prosperado sin depredadores ni intervención humana.
Se han sostenido alimentándose de aves migratorias que usan la isla como parada de descanso.
Las serpientes, conocidas como puntas de lanza doradas, no existen en ningún otro lugar del mundo y son totalmente exclusivas de la isla.
También resultan ser uno de los reptiles más venenosos de la Tierra.

La cabeza de lanza dorada es parte del género cabeza de lanza, un tipo de víbora de pozo, y tiene el veneno de acción más rápida del género y es cinco veces más potente que su pariente más cercano, la yararaca.
Su potente mordisco corroe la carne circundante y provoca hemorragias internas e insuficiencia orgánica.
En promedio, la cabeza de lanza dorada crece hasta 70 centímetros, pero hay informes de algunos ejemplares que crecen hasta más de un metro.
El gobierno brasileño prohibió todos los viajes a la isla debido al peligro que representan las serpientes para la vida humana.
Pero también debido al peligro que los humanos representan para las serpientes: la serpiente cabeza de lanza dorada está clasificada como en peligro crítico y el área está protegida para preservar esta población única, única en su género en el planeta.
A pesar de los mejores esfuerzos del gobierno, los cazadores ilegales todavía atacan la isla para capturar estas serpientes vulnerables y venderlas en el mercado negro.
Leyendas urbanas.
Circulan varias leyendas sobre la isla y sus principales habitantes.
Una de ellas, es la de una banda de serpientes que acaba con la familia de un farero y la historia de tres pescadores hambrientos que mueren en un charco de sangre después de ser atacados.
La verdad es que, si bien la serpiente cabeza de lanza dorada es altamente venenosa, no ha habido ninguna muerte registrada oficialmente por esta criatura, muy probablemente porque su especie no existe en ningún otro lugar del mundo y la gente tiende a no detenerse en la isla.
Visitar la isla es ilegal, inmensamente arriesgado y requiere permiso de la marina brasileña.
El antiveneno se encuentra en el Instituto Butantã de São Paulo, a 150 kilómetros, por lo que una picadura puede ser fatal.
El instituto tiene puntas de lanza doradas con fines de ordeño e investigación para que puedan verse de cerca y personalmente allí, pero con un vidrio de seguridad de bienvenida en el medio.
