¿Por qué preocupa tanto a los expertos la Falla de San Andrés? Porque en la zona se podría presentar el MÁS GRANDE terremoto nunca antes visto.
Esto debido a que la sección central de movimiento lento de la falla de San Andrés de casi 1,300 kilómetros de largo en California podría albergar terremotos mucho más grandes de lo que se pensaba anteriormente, muestra un estudio publicado en marzo 2022.
Esta falla de San Andrés se divide en tres secciones, dos estáticas y una de movimiento lento.
Los investigadores estudiaron rocas de una sección central tomada 3 kilómetros bajo tierra.
«El gran problema es que en realidad se moverá hacia arriba en ese movimiento vertical debajo del océano. Eso resultará en un tsunami», dijo el meteorólogo de coordinación de advertencias Ryan Aylward.
Estamos justo ahí. Estamos en el punto en el que debemos pensar en esto muy, muy, muy seriamente y estar preparados para un gran terremoto que suceda algún día», dijo Aylward.
Según Aylward, este terremoto es inevitable y es probable que ocurra más temprano que tarde.

El nuevo estudio fue realizado por el Observatorio de la Tierra Lamont-Doherty de la Universidad de Columbia en Palisades, Nueva York.
En él, se encontró que esta región de movimiento lento también es capaz de producir grandes terremotos en una escala similar a los de otras partes de la línea.
Descubrieron esto al mirar hacia atrás a través del registro geológico de la falla.
Entonces encontraron que ha experimentado terremotos de magnitud siete y más, que está a la par con el terremoto de 1906 que destruyó San Francisco, el último “Big One”.
La monstruosa Falla de San Andrés divide California de sur a norte, causada por dos placas tectónicas que chocan lentamente entre sí a lo largo.
