El volcán activo más grande del mundo, el Mauna Loa, en Hawái, entra en erupción por primera vez en 40 años.
Mauna Loa ha despertado de su letargo de 40 años y está arrojando cenizas y escombros, pero por el momento los flujos de lava están contenidos dentro del área de la cumbre, según el Servicio Geológico de EE. UU (USGS).
La erupción comenzó el domingo por la noche en la caldera de la cima del volcán. El lunes temprano, los flujos de lava estaban contenidos dentro del área de la cumbre y no son una amenaza para las comunidades cercanas.
Sin embargo, los flujos de lava en la región de la cumbre son visibles desde la localidad de Kona. Actualmente, no hay indicios de ninguna migración de la erupción a una zona de ruptura, según el Observatorio de Volcanes de Hawái. Una zona de ruptura es donde la roca se agrieta, es relativamente débil y es más fácil que de ahí emerja el magma.
Aun así, es imposible predecir durante cuánto tiempo entrará en erupción el volcán y si podría causar que la lava fluya hacia áreas pobladas de la isla, según el Servicio Geológico de EE. UU.
Aunque la agencia señaló que no había indicios de que saliera lava de la cumbre, dijo que ha abierto refugios en Kailua-Kona y Pahala, pues hay personas que están evacuando por su voluntad a lo largo de la costa sur de Kona.
El USGS advirtió a los residentes en riesgo por los flujos de lava de Mauna Loa que deben estar alertas y preparados.
Los científicos habían estado en alerta debido a un aumento reciente en los terremotos en la cima del volcán.
Partes de la Isla Grande están bajo un aviso de caída de ceniza. Se cree que hasta un 0.6 cm de ceniza podría acumularse en algunas áreas.
Mauna Loa es uno de los cinco volcanes que juntos forman la Isla Grande de Hawái, que es la isla más al sur del archipiélago hawaiano.
Mauna Loa, se eleva a 4,169 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Es el vecino mucho más grande del volcán Kilauea, que entró en erupción en una zona residencial y destruyó 700 casas en 2018. Algunas de sus laderas son mucho más empinadas que las del Kilauea, por lo que cuando entra en erupción, su lava puede fluir mucho más rápido.
