Fuerte sismo en placa Sudamericana en subducción con el Antártico.
La placa Sudamericana converge en el Atlántico sur y está en constante movimiento y en futura formación de un nuevo continente.
De acuerdo con informes de la plataforma Dicovery Volcano, la mejor app para la detección de sismos de fuerte magnitud, un terremoto muy fuerte aconteció en la placa Sudamericana.
El terremoto con magnitud 6.1, se presentó el día de hoy en el Océano Atlántico Sur, cerca de las Islas de Georgia del Sur y Sándwich del Sur, a las 7:14 pm (GMT -2).
Acontecido con menos de 10 kilómetros de profundidad, no pone en peligro vidas humanas.
El sismo no reunió las características suficientes para emitir una ALARMA por tsunami. Por lo que no existe peligro para las costas de los países sudamericanos que colindan con la región.
Por su parte, el Centro Sismológico del Mediterráneo situó la profundidad del sismo en menos de 2 kilómetros.
La placa de islas Sándwich.
La placa o micro placa de Sándwich o Sándwich del Sur es una placa tectónica limitada por la placa Sudamericana en subducción hacia el placa Antártica hacia el sur y la placa de Scotia hacia el oeste.
Estas islas se encuentran situadas en esta pequeña región.
Cada año, la placa se traslada hacia el este a un ritmo de 7 centímetros anuales, enfrentando y ubicándose debajo de la placa Sudamericana.
Esto produjo el surgimiento del archipiélago de las Sándwich del Sur hace unos cinco millones de años.
Es por ello que esta placa sostiene una alta actividad sísmica y volcánica.
El proceso de colisión de ambas placas produce la desaparición de la pequeña placa de Scotia bajo la gran placa continental de América del Sur (subducción), y produciendo frecuentes terremotos debido a la energía liberada por el choque.
Sobre la Fosa podemos encontrar un buen número de islas pertenecientes a la Antártida, como es el caso de las Sándwich (un archipiélago de origen volcánico en forma de arco sobre la fosa) y de las Islas de Georgia del Sur.
Estas islas actualmente se encuentran deshabitadas.
La subducción entre ambas placas produce la formación de una corteza de menor densidad.
Esto da lugar a la aparición de continentes creados a base de magma entremezclado con sedimentos plegados, que terminarán por emerger a la superficie.
Muy probablemente, en unos cuántos millones de años, en la zona tenga lugar la formación de un nuevo continente.
La zona más sísmica.
Latinoamérica es una región del planeta que está expuesta permanentemente a terremotos a causa de su ubicación en el límite de varias placas tectónicas que forman parte del llamado Anillo o Cinturón de Fuego del Pacífico.
Esta es el área de mayor actividad sísmica y volcánica del planeta.
La región está propensa a sismos continuos y de gran intensidad.
Recientemente, un terremoto de magnitud 7.3 azotó la región del Amazonas peruano. Afectando a miles de personas que habitan las localidades de los cantones del país.
La reciente actividad del Anillo de Fuego es intensa.
